About Sunnyslope W.I.N.S.
What Is Sunnyslope W.I.N.S.?
Sunnyslope W.I.N.S. is a grass roots effort
to bring community members, law enforcement, city and social service agencies
together. As partners, these groups are working to protect our neighborhoods
and restore our community.
Our Mission
To revitalize and improve
the physical, social and economic health of the diverse Sunnyslope
community,
and to support and empower neighborhoods to enhance the quality of
life through community based problem-solving and public/private cooperation.
How Is Sunnyslope W.I.N.S. Helping Sunnyslope?
Weed & Seed helps Sunnyslope by preventing,
controlling and reducing crime, drug abuse and gang activity in the
community.
Sunnyslope W.I.N.S. ensures lasting services are available for our
residents. Programs include adult education, after school activities
and community
events.
Sunnyslope is in its fourth year of
Weed & Seed funding.
As a Weed & Seed site, Sunnyslope has had many accomplishments,
see the Reports section of this site for specifics.
Current areas of focus include:
- A structured partnership with adult and juvenile
probation officers in Sunnyslope.
- A partnership with County
Attorney's office is needed to coordinate and ensure prosecution of
felony criminals.
- Measures to improve communication between community
and police.
- Improved communication between block watches and
police department, i.e. upcoming public events, crime prevention and
volunteer opportunities, etc.
- Measures to overcome communication barriers with
non-English speaking residents.
- Free after school care/activities for youth grades
K-8, particularly with an emphasis on diversion, character development
and esteem building.
- High school level education opportunities for adults,
allowing for a high school diploma vs. a GED which is not sufficient
for some work opportunities, including some military posts and some
nursing programs.
- Increased marketing of home ownership programs to
benefit the community.
- Increased cooperation to enforce code violations
in blighted property in needed.
- Economic revitalization
