Lincoln Learning Center Collecting Box Tops

You can make a difference for Lincoln Learning Center every time your shop for groceries! Just clip the Box Tops coupons from hundreds of your favorite General Mills products and send them to Lincoln Learning Center (303 E. Eva). Learn more about Box Tops 4 Education.

¿Practice Your Español?
Student? Native speaker? Just want to practice your conversational skills? Visit our  monthly Spanish conversation group to use and practice Spanish and meet others with the same interest. Jokes, music discussion, conversation on many topics (suggest your own!), plus occasional outings or lunch meetings.

Everyone is welcome, but intermediate or better Spanish language fluency is helpful. Visit the Yahoo group online or contact the moderator, Jill Ginsburg, at 602-678-4277, for more about the group. Meetings are at 11 am on the second Saturday of each month, Unlimited Coffee, 741 E. Glendale. There is no cost for membership.

District 3 City Council Events

Free Shuttle Runs Through Sunnyslope

The Phoenix Public Transit Department offers Phoenix Neighborhood Circulator service in the Sunnyslope neighborhood. The service is free.

The SMART route runs every 30 minutes and operates 7 days a week from about 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday; and from about 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

The circulator mini-buses are painted with a large purple stripe bearing the words “Phoenix Neighborhood Circulator.” Each vehicle is 24 feet long by 8 feet wide; seats 19 passengers; and has two wheelchair positions, a wheelchair lift, and a rack for two bicycles.

One Stop Eco-Friendly Shop Opens

Committed eco-activists and co-owners of Central Slope, Michael Keele (lead designer/founder of eco-friendly shop Keeleco) and Amy Lilie, ND (licensed naturopathic physician) have collaborated to launch Central Slope (8801 N Central Ave.), a one stop eco-friendly shop specializing in herbal teas and green home living products.

PING Golf Club Factory Tours Available to Public

Did you know that the world-famous PING golf clubs are made right here in Phoenix?  If you want to see how these excellent golf clubs are made, reserve a tour at the factory, located at 2201 W. Desert Cove Ave.  Tours are available to the public on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays by reservation only.  Tours begin at 9am and last approximately 2 hours.  There is no charge, but tours fill quickly so reserve your spot early.  The walking tour is wheelchair accessible.  Children ages 9 and younger are not permitted.  To reserve your spot, please call Millie at 602-687-5385.

Free Safety Devices Installed Through Senior Fall Prevention Program

Rebuilding Together has also recently launched another free program called Senior Fall Prevention Services.  Volunteers will inspect your home and then install free home safety devices if you meet our income guidelines.  If you exceed them, we will offer all the same services at very low affordable prices.  Please call Rebuilding Together at 480-774-0237 for more information on this program, or complete and return the application available for download here.

Desert Mission Neighborhood Renewal develops 2- to 4-bedroom energy-efficient homes for home buyers. National Hotline for Families Facing Foreclosure

Along with local resources that may offer financial assistance, there is now a national 24/7 hotline that is acting as an intermediary between lenders and clients to find solutions for families. It is a coalition of non-profits that have experience negotiating the issues associated with foreclosure.


The hotline is for both English and Spanish clients. It is 1-888-995-HOPE.

Sunnyslope Buddhist Center Offers Variety of Programming

Clear Light Buddhist Center is located at 614 E Townley Ave., near Dunlap and 7th Street. Open to everyone, the Center offers meditation classes, a variety of introductory and in-depth courses, chanted prayers and retreats.

Help the Budget: Volunteer for Phoenix

The City of Phoenix Graffiti Busters program funding was affected by the budget reductions recently adopted by the Phoenix City Council. Many people responded to the program reductions by asking for opportunities to volunteer to help maintain programs such as Graffiti Busters. The city quickly established the phoenix.gov/volunteer website. Explore the citywide possibilities available in neighborhoods, social services, parks and recreation, libraries, Sky Harbor and in public safety to see if there is an opportunity for you.

Check out this cool website developed by the Maricopa Council on Youth Sports and Physical Activity (MCYSPA). It maps all the places to play in the Valley! Click on the icon on the map after you choose a sport. It will give the address and details.

Sunnyslope 2nd Saturdays

Grinders Coffee Company, 17 East Dunlap Avenue, owner Dennis Miller explains, “We’re doing our best to make Sunnyslope a cultural hub for the city of Phoenix.” The independent coffee house (that roasts their own!) has an art showing from 7 to 9 p.m. the 1st Saturday of each month, and often features live acoustic music along with an opportunity to meet the artists. The art remains on display for a month and is available for purchase. If you miss the first Saturday at Grinders, there’s always the 2nd, when from 7 to 10 p.m. guests can enjoy the fantastic sound of Pulsate Jazz and Hacksaw Blues, professional musicians.

First Wednesday Is Caregiver Support Group

All caregivers are welcome to attend the Caregiver Support Group on the first Wednesday of each month (except July and August). Meetings are held at the Cowden Center, 9202 N. 2nd Street, from 10:30 a.m. to noon.  Caregivers network with each other as they have the opportunity to interact with people who have similar life circumstances.  It is uplifting for the caregivers as they encourage each other. All caregivers are welcome.

Sunnyslope Historical Society 2010 Events

Bring your hidden treasures to the Sunnyslope Historical Society's 3rd Annual Antique Appraisal Fair on Saturday, February 13 from 9:30 to 4 p.m. Expert appraiser Sean Morton of Morton Appraisals will review up to 2 items per person in exchange for a $15 donation per item to the Historical Society.

The Historical Society's annual parking lot sale will take place Saturday, March 13 and Sunday, March 14 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donate items for the sale (no clothes, shoes or items heavier than two people can carry)by bringing them to the museum during regular hours of operation.

The Sunnyslope Historical Society museum is open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. for more information call 602-331-3150.
